The island of Nevis has several hikes and trails you can take, some with tour guides and some you can take on your own. The hike isn’t too challenging, so even an inexperienced hiker will enjoy the trail. For those who are ready for a challenge, you can hike up Mt. Nevis. The center of Basseterre is Independence Square, named when St. Kitts and Nevis earned political independence in 1983. Once the site of slave auctions and city meetings, the square full of history and gorgeous architecture is now a lovely garden. It's a great spot for enjoying a picnic lunch and people watching! Take a break and enjoy relaxing in the square.

If you're up for a laid-back beach bar, then check out the Shiggidy Shack. Located near Timothy Beach Hotel and on the most popular beach in St Kitts, Frigate Bay, this bar is a favorite among locals and returning vacationers. Beaches are one of the main reasons to visit Nevis, and arguablely, one of the best on Nevis is Pinney's Beach. Stretching out to almost 4 miles, Pinney's has everything you could possibly want from a beach: lovely sand, calm waters and plenty of palm trees to give you some shade. There are beach bars and shacks to provide all the food, drink and entertainment that you can want. However, if you want some escape, the beach is so long that it's easy to find a quiet place all your own. Best of all, this beach is safe for swimming and snorkeling.

Nevis has plenty of beautiful photo ops in the countryside. If you really want to see Nevis up close and personal, then rent a jeep for the day and go exploring. As you head out to explore the island on your own, you'll see amazing abandoned sugar mills, quaint little villages and lots of examples of buildings built in the traditional West Indian architecture style. Just note that the side roads can be bumpy, so make sure you buckle up!

It looks like baseball or field hockey, but it isn't. The game of cricket is actually the top and most popular sport in Nevis. Where can you see a great cricket game? On Thursday nights in Grove Park, you can watch both men and women playing the island’s favorite sport. It's fun hanging out with the locals and watching a sport they love so much. Cricket season is between January and mid-July, so if you're in the area around that time, make sure to check it out.

Want to get one of the best views on the island? Then take a horseback ride at Hermitage Plantation Inn. On this fun and relaxing adventure, you’ll tour the southeast side of the island and head up onto the breathtaking Saddle Hill. This is also a historical site because this is the place that British Naval Admiral Horatio Nelson (a famous Napoleonic War hero) used as his lookout. Since it's a great lookout point, make sure to bring a camera along to get perfect panoramic shots of the island.

You’ll fly into Robert L Bradshaw International Airport (SKB). If you're flying from New York, Atlanta, Charlotte or Miami, you might be able to find a direct flight into St. Kitts. Otherwise, you can find connecting flights from San Juan, St. Martin, Antigua and other Caribbean islands.

To get around the island, taxis and buses are available. The buses look like minivan taxis. To distinguish between the two, if the front has an “H”, then it’s a private bus. If it has a “T”, then it’s a taxi.
