3/10 Horrible Customer Service and no help from management
My husband and I booked this trip months ago and were very much looking forward to our stay. To our disappointment, nothing was what it seemed. We stayed at St James as preferred guests, only to realize that preferred status didnt mean anything. People who were not preferred had the same amenities. We arrived Monday Nov 11th, tired from our trip, hoping to get a shower and relax. We had to wait 1 1/2 hours in the lobby for our room to be ready. Staff seemed irritated with us, but we patiently waited to be able to change out of our hot travel clothing. We spent the rest of the evening in the pool, which was nice. Overheard a couple say they were non preferred and there was nobody checking so they got right into our pool. Tuesday is when all hell broke loose. We had planned to do some activities and excursions today but were met with chaos and nobody to talk to about it. The employees went on strike. I woke up to loud screaming and chanting and hundreds of people outside the gate yelling. As my first time out of the country i was terrified at what was happening. Got on the phone and tried calling down to the desk, housekeeping, concierge and no answer. I walked the property looking for someone with answers and none to be found. It was several hours later when I finally learned what was going on. The bars and restaurants were closed. We had just old breakfast food in the preferred lounge. We didn't have any clean towels and no housekeeping that day. There was no room service for food. Some other guests and myself gathered supplies ( water, ice and what snacks we had to share) we tried to make the best out of the situation. I think one restaurant opened for dinner, but the line was absolutely horrible. Wednesday the strike was supposed to be over, we still had no clean towels or housekeeping and our mini fridge was still empty. We had food in our secret box from monday that was still sitting in there. Spoke to the lady at the front to request all these items, but did not receive them til thursday our last night there. I had to take a pool towel just to be able to shower. Thursday things seemed a little better. We finally had room service come and stock our fridge with waters and clean towels and sheets. We booked an excursion that was rained out after they drove us there and canceled. It rained most of the day so we didnt get to enjoy much that day. Finally friday, our travel day. i spent all morning fighting to receive a refund for the cruise we booked. Our overall expirience was not at all what we hoped for. The property was beautiful, but the staff was not so helpful. We thought someone from the property would address the issues and at least let us know what was happening and try to make it better. There was a complete lack of communication. We were not offered a tour of the property and had no idea about some places we would have checked out if we knew. I went almost 3 days without water in my room, clean towels and bedding and to finally get into a line for a restaurant I didn't have to wait for 2 hours. I expected to be treated like a VIP but I was truly disappointed. I spent a lot of money for this trip and am currently not at all satisfied. At this time I would not recommend anyone to stay here for the price we had to pay.

Very Disappointing!
A strike at the property cast a shadow over our week. The first day was a disaster and we we not compensated for the loss of an entire day. We were shuttled after seven hours waiting for our rooms to Breathless, a sister property down the road. The next couple of days were not up to par as the resort struggled to recover from the walk out. The room was awful. I felt like I was at a bad roadside motel. Food was below average and the breakfast buffet was horrible. The staff was doing their best, but it is obvious that Hyatt is doing a very poor job at this once five-star property. The couple we were with had been here five times and were disgusted at the experience and the condition of the hotel.

Good. Not great.
The staff was fantastic. We did experience an employee strike that left us short of food, water and amenities for a full day. It seems the company has not taken care of the staff in a way that would have proactively mitigated such an event. The good: - staff - Watersports on site - Comfortable beds The bad: - Tipping required to supplement underpaid staff - Sloppy construction and maintenance leading to minor annoyances The mediocre: - the food. None of the restaurants serve much better than mediocre food. - The drinks. Low quality sugar bombs. Even for NA options. We drank water.

Employees make this resort!
My husband and I visited Secrets St. James 11/12-11/19. This was my second visit in just over a year. We used Club Mobay & quickly proceeded through entry at the airport. Starting off your visit with their rum punch is a must! Carribean World transfers were professional and friendly once again. Prior to arriving at Secrets St. James we were told there would be workers staged by the gate. They walked off the job in hopes a strike would bring attention & change to their low wages. Lots of people were leaving the resort due to this situation. In spite of the chaos, we were greeted enthusiastically and welcomed home by Jamaal & Sherman. I remembered them from my last visit as super kind and so helpful. We tried to check in upon arriving, but we were turned away several times. At one point, we were told they might not be honoring any reservations. We finally got a room at 9pm. We later spoke with Nordia (front desk supervisor) about all of our concerns and frustrations. She listened & truly seemed empathetic. She gave us several generous perks to apologize for our inconveniences. She is a huge asset to the hotel. We also were impressed by Geniveve, the Carribean World representative that was on site. She was very determined to improve our stay and she was very helpful. Housekeeping seemed extremely affected by the strike. Our room was only serviced 2 days out the 8 we stayed. Towels were at a premium everyday for the room and at the pools. We are not pool people but they are large and are kept clean. Many people were disappointed with the Bali beds taking up so much chair space & costing extra. The best bartender at the pools was Cruze! He makes everything fun & his drinks are delicious. The variety of outdoor alcohol was extremely limited this visit. The lobby bar needs to be upgraded. It’s a dreary space no one wants to gather in. Not up to usual Secrets standards at all. The bartenders in there were not friendly nor were they knowledgeable. The buffet seemed to be scaled way back. There was not as many options as in the past. There were lots of empty items and it just was not aestheticly pleasing. We love the Cocoa Cafe for breakfast & 24/7 stops. Lots of specialty coffee & tea options. The pastries, sandwiches, fruit, & icecream were delicious! Get the Grapenuts icecream! Lunches at the Barefoot Grill (jerk chicken, patties, & pizza) Oceana, and Seaside grill were all tasty! The beaches were all clean, but need more chairs. We visited the Piano Bar every evening. Dr. Phil, Wilton, Colin, and Trevor do an excellent job of serving drinks and offering the best experience. Its location by the mountains/ water is really stunning. Dinners had longer wait times than last year. Trevoy @ Himitsu made our meal fun. Francheco @ Blue Mountain was a top notch server too. I would recommend and hope that Hyatt take a look at their employees and pay them a livable wage. Clients aren’t going to support hotels that don’t value their staff. The people are a large part of why I returned here.

Amazing staff
Great services. The local workers are so great. All of them. Shout outs to those we loved talking with. Sashy and freestyle with the entertainment. Kurtis in the hotel lobby bar. And at breathless Andrene (hostess) and Orane from the alttude rooftop bar.
