Amazing Friendly Staff But Not a 5 Star Resort
This was our first visit to beautiful Huatulco and third stay at a Secrets Resort. We booked a 2-week trip through West Jet Vacations -Deal of the Day Room Feb 19 to March 5. The resort was secluded being the only one in the Conejos Bay. All 6 of the three-story buildings with rooms faced the ocean. Many of the 1st floor rooms had swim outs or jacuzzi, while the 2nd & 3rd floors had better ocean views. Our King room had a beautiful ocean view from the 2nd floor of Building 1. Yessica, our maid, always did an excellent job cleaning our room. She was wonderful and often left us flower petals at the sink area and bed. All the staff at this resort were the most friendly, genuine and extremely hard working we have ever met in Mexico. I can understand why so many guests we met had been returning every year. It is an older crowd and mostly Canadian with direct flights from several Canadian cities. We had dinner at all the a-la-carte restaurants at least twice. At the Japanese, Steakhouse, French, Mexican and Seafood we had good to very good meals and excellent service. However, the Italian Restaurant was sub-par with tasteless entrees, poorly cooked pasta, and no air conditioning both nights we went there. We did book one evening at the Dreams resort through the concierge and our dinner at Portofino (Italian) was excellent. The cab fare was around 100 pesos each way, but confirm the price with the driver upfront. For lunch we usually went up to the Steakhouse, which had a gorgeous ocean view, for calamari, grilled fish taco or a grilled fish of the day entrée. A few times we enjoyed the freshly baked wood fired pizza down by the pool. I only ate lunch once at the Market Café, a few bites of a partly uncooked hamburger, and was violently ill for 24 hours followed by 5 days of being unwell. We ordered lunch once through room service using the Hyatt App which I highly recommend installing. The App was very handy to see the daily activities, restaurant info and menus, as well as housekeeping requests or extra water bottles if you missed the restock. We used it often when I was unwell for housekeeping requests and water. For breakfast we preferred the quieter Mexican Restaurant, although less options than Market Café buffet, they had a less busy omelet station. Every morning, we were greeted with friendly service by Carmen who knew our routine of a mimosa and a cappuccino. Our West Jet Rep, Deva with Maxi Travel, was a great guy and very helpful with excursion info and hotel guidance. He was available in the lobby every day to book tours and I highly recommend the city tour, waterfalls and snorkeling cruises. As well he can even arrange for a customized private tour for your small group. My husband really enjoyed tennis every morning with Alejandro and Daniel. They were awesome for tennis and other activities! I enjoyed the free 30-minute spa service, called Take A Breath, which was offered once a week at the spa. Although Secrets offered a lot of daily activities, we were extremely disappointed that during our entire two week stay there was a black flag for all ocean activities due to a crocodile sighting in our bay. We could not snorkel, sail, kayak or paddleboard. Unfortunately, even after speaking to the concierge a few times, there was nothing they could offer such as moving the equipment to Dreams for use by Secrets guests. Overall Secrets Huatulco could use some improvements as it is not what we expected for a Secrets 5 star. It was maintained but in need of some décor updates and some colour in the French, Seafood and Italian restaurants. Stark white walls with no ambiance. Some dishes needed more flavour and better presentation. In most restaurants, visibly dirty tablecloths were not changed between seating's. Drinks were average, they need to make a better margarita and mojito. My husband’s Micheladas and banana daquiris were hit or miss depending on the bartender. Several areas of the pool were also in need of repair with missing tiles. More shade in the pool and at the lounge chairs would be great as it was 30-33 C when we were there Feb/March. Getting a lounge chair with shade at the pool was impossible due to people reserving them all day with a towel and a random book. I really wish they would resolve that issue as it seems to be a common complaint. In all we would consider returning if price was reasonable as the staff were 5 star.

Highs and lows
My wife and I spent our anniversary here from April 3rd to 10th. Unfortunately, our stay got off to a rocky start. Because of mechanical issues on the plane we missed our flight to Huatulco and had to catch one the next day. I informed the hotel reservations team as soon as I knew we weren't going to be there for our first night(around 10am), however, they said they were unable to change our reservation and we would still be charged for the first night. This was incredibly frustrating, since we had no control over missing our flight and coming a day late. I would have understood if we were going to miss a significant portion of our stay, but we were only asking them to modify our reservation from 7 nights to 6 and they were unable to do so. Upon arriving to the resort it was extremely beautiful and the staff was very friendly. Unfortunately, things just kept not going out way. I got a stomach bug on day 3 from the eggs Benedict at Castaways and my wife got some gluten exposure from the barefoot grill which put her out of commission for a whole day. This was very unfortunate, because we were very careful about always mentioning her gluten allergy at every meal. Despite this, there were some bright spots during the vacation. The service was excellent, the staff friendly and attentive. The rooms and resort in general were very clean. This is why my review is getting 3 stars, there were high points and low points and so it averages out to a mediocre stay. I wish I could give it a higher score but the things that went wrong left a sour taste in my mouth.

Spring Break at Secrets
Over all it was a good stay. The resort itself is starting to show it's age and for us weas very big as what we normally stay at. Food overall was good, (a couple of restaurants really good and couple okay(, service was great, all very attentive and friendly. I would stay again.

Really Good Experience
So many mixed reviews but this property was great! Excellent service, good food and drink, nice sized clean rooms and great views of the ocean. Fresh towels, good pillows and mattresses, even a Nespresso machine in our room. All inclusive service was great. Even turndown service complete with rose petals. Staff very friendly and helpful, especially Kelly in the Preferred Club.

Quietness and Views were the BEST
All in all it was a good trip, it just would've been nice for the resort to have taken the initiative to get our bagage that arrived a day later from the aiport instead of us having to take the time away from our vacation to take a taxi to the airport which didn't even go to the airport we had to get in another taxi then walk from the airport to across the street a long distance from the airport to get back to the resort. The food could of been more authintic and the sales people bombarding you upon entry is a bit much especially after a full day of flying
