Fantastic resort
Great food, no shortage of chairs, nice pools, quiet and not a crazy loud place. Again food was really great, wonderful selection of food and fruit. Nice rooms. The only thing people need to know because it is not well advertised is that this hotel is not on the beach. There is a bus that takes you there hourly from 8am until 6pm. There is a steak restaurant on the beach that you can book, but you can only book it on the day of at 7am and you will need to take a bus to the beach.

Relaxing and Enjoyable Stay at Riu Lupita
Our stay at Riu Lupita was exceptional! The food was delicious with a wide variety to choose from — especially the sweets. While a few desserts were a bit off, having so many options made the experience more interesting and enjoyable. The unlimited drinks were a great part of the package. That said, I had quite a few, and as someone who doesn't drink much, I was surprised that I didn’t really feel any kind of alcohol “kick.” So, that part was a little underwhelming. The room itself was clean and satisfactory, and the staff were friendly and helpful for the most part. Being a tourist destination, it’s understandable that some staff subtly expect tips here and there — nothing unreasonable, and overall, their service was great. One suggestion would be to offer an earlier shuttle bus service for those who want to catch the sunrise or sunset at the beach. We had to walk early in the morning and again after the sunset, as there was no bus available during those times. Not a dealbreaker, but something that could enhance the experience even more. Hats off to their entertainment team — they did a fantastic job! From the three swimming pools and gym to the volleyball court and table tennis, there were plenty of activities that added real value to our stay. All in all, Riu Lupita is a wonderful place to relax and have a good time. Our overall experience was great.

Friendly staff, good cleaning, delicious food, shuttlebus to the beach club if you don't prefer to walk. Bus also to city centre if you would liketol do someshopping in Playadel Carmen. Lovely surroundkngs and good entertainment. This was the second tim we stayed at Riu Lupita and we were not disappointed this time either. This hotel doesn't feel so enormous so it suits us perfekt. I definiteley recommend this hotel.

A Disappointing Stay at Riu Lupita: A Warning to Travelers
Introduction: We are deeply disappointed—and yes, frustrated—by our stay at Riu Lupita in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, to the point where we needed time to recover after returning home. Nevertheless, we feel compelled to share our experience to warn others: lower your expectations or reconsider the value for money at this so-called "5-star" resort. Expectation vs. Reality: We chose Riu Lupita, advertised as a 5-star hotel, for a luxury vacation. By definition, 5-star hotels promise top-tier accommodations, facilities, and service exceeding 4-star standards. The brochures, website, and even signage at the entrance emphasized this 5-star claim. The high price we paid for a 9-night all-inclusive stay suggested we would receive first-class service, food, and amenities. Unfortunately, reality fell far short of expectations. Staff: Most staff members were friendly (with the exception of those at the Mexican restaurant). Since Spanish is my native language, interactions may have been smoother for us, but we observed that other guests were generally treated appropriately. Accommodation: The hotel consists of standalone single-level villas and 3-story buildings with guest rooms. None of these buildings have elevators. Imagine hauling luggage up stairs in sweltering heat—or worse, doing so with health issues. Luckily, we were assigned a second-floor room, but dragging two 20kg suitcases 400 meters and up two flights of stairs was exhausting. Shouldn’t elevators be standard in a 5-star establishment? The Room: Our room included a bathroom, bedroom, and balcony. While superficially clean, the space felt outdated and poorly maintained. Issues included: Mold: Visible on the bathroom mirror, in the corners, and behind the sliding door (see photos). Refrigerator: It was not turned on, with a missing freezer door and exposed wiring where the plug hung loosely from the wall (photo attached). Food: Buffet: A large, impersonal space serving 300+ guests. Meals were bland and repetitive. Meats (beef, pork, chicken) were consistently overcooked and tough. Even the fruit—surprisingly—lacked flavor, unusual for a subtropical region. Mexican Restaurant: Limited menu (5 dishes), disinterested staff, and mediocre quality. The sea bass was edible but underwhelming. Italian Restaurant: Closed when the Mexican restaurant was open, and vice versa. We did not visit it, so no further comments. Off-Site Restaurant: Reservations had to be made starting at 7:00 AM, as tables booked up quickly. We skipped this due to the hassle of shuttle buses and reservations. The Final Straw: The day before departure, we shared our complaints with the tour operator’s representative at the hotel. They promised to escalate our feedback but have yet to respond after 5 days. Shortly afterward, a staff member approached us at the pool to document our complaints—but stopped writing halfway through due to the sheer number of issues we raised. Later, during lunch, another employee handed us a generic feedback form, unaware of the earlier conversation. We found this particularly strange. Suspicious "Improvement": That evening, dinner suddenly transformed: chefs hovered at the buffet, managers in suits sampled dishes, and service staff doubled. The food quality temporarily improved—only to revert to its usual mediocrity the next day. What happened? An inspection had taken place that day. A transparent (and shameful) attempt to appease the inspectors. Conclusion: Riu Lupita fails to meet 5-star standards in accommodation, facilities, or dining. Their sporadic "efforts" to address complaints felt like theatrics rather than genuine action. For the price paid, this stay was unacceptable. Travelers deserve better: avoid this hotel or brace for disappointment.
