Clean and safe
I give this a 4/5 because no place is perfect. Stayed in room 1201. The room was clean and we were offered this room on site as an upgrade from a junior suite with walk out pool. There is a third party company on site that is moderately pushy in buying into the Hyatt brand but it’s not a time share. Or at least those of us who understand the facts it’s just a way to suck money from you making you feel good but really it’s a glorified scam to put you in a position of discounts. I would say this is still not the way you ever want to go. We went thru the presentation and said no. Then had to say no again. Then no about four more time for the last presentation to ask us to leave the room. Obviously their tone changed from nice to get out. But the trip was a success and the weather was beautiful. Pool has algae and I feel like they know it but are not sure what to do. I saw several important local people in the pool area taking photos of the water and concrete. It’s obvious the pools need drained and scrubbed but what do I know. Food was a 4/5 too lots of options The resort is beautiful and clean and the community bathrooms are clean as well Wheelchairs and scooters are able to get around well. The patrons we saw were mostly from England and overseas. All in all I place to return to minus. This resort is 1.5 hours south of Cancun. Be ready for a long day if traffic is bad.

Secrets Akumal take 6 x
Arrived March 17-24. Had another amazing vacation. Check in was flawless . Karina ( building concierge) was attentive and super awesome! Rooms are spacious with lots of storage. First few days at the pool, staff was taking down room #'s and names (that's changed since we were there last) and told someone had to be at our chairs at all times. Then they were giving us 10 min away. Finally due to circumstances they gave us 40mins to eat then be back. Like I said that's something new. Probably someone abusing the lounge chairs. Shout-out to the pool concierges David and Antonio for their kindness and always making sure everyone had fun. Pool waiters Abraham, Karla and Fillipe for remembering our drinks and swiftness in getting them there! The bartenders at the snack bar Jorge and Mario for always making sure we had the best of the best! Beach waiter Hector (AKA The protector) you are the best and irreplaceable! The entertainment team was truly motivating and I absolutely loved Lizbeth. Can't wait to see everyone again in September ❤️

Enjoyable with a few gotchas
This was our second mother/daughter trip to Secrets Akumal. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience with some room for improvement. Our first trip was during COVID and we had an ocean-view room in the Preferred Club; this trip, we had a run-of-house room booked as a Black Friday special. We went back and forth about whether or not we’d miss Preferred Club, but opted to skip it because the special pricing was just too good to justify spending thousands of dollars to upgrade. In the end, I think this was the right decision for us: we never had a problem finding loungers at the beach, we weren’t interested in the Greek restaurant, we loved the breakfast buffet so didn’t miss the a la carte breakfast restaurant, and we don’t do bars and so weren’t particularly interested in the Club alcohol offerings. Our check in experience was efficient and extremely welcoming, right up until we were directed to some gentleman in the lobby who wanted to tell us about our free gifts. Uh-huh. Right. It took over five minutes of playing dumb (no thank you! I don’t want a free massage!) before he finally gave up and went away and we could get to the room. He even wanted me to sign something “declining” my coupons—I scrawled a random signature with a made-up name and then we were done. I suppose this must be an effective sales approach for them, but it makes no sense to me. We were tired and just wanted to reach the room—not fend off a sales pitch. The rooms were overall lovely. We were in building 8, which was far too close to the lobby for our tastes at night—we had 8301 and could literally watch the musical acts from our balcony. We absolutely loved the wall of jungle in front of us, but once night fell it got LOUD. The AC worked extremely well, the large tub in the room filled up quickly, and there was excellent water pressure in the shower, so other than the nighttime noise it was fantastic… until our last two days when suddenly there was a bevy of workmen painting the hallway and then they moved into the next door room and redid everything in there. There was constant banging and a reek of paint; we literally had to climb over their ladders when we tried to exit our room. They were very friendly though! The concierge said they were prepping for an onsite inspection. The breakfast buffet was STUNNING. We had skipped it on our previous visit in favor of room service as a COVID precaution, but we ate there every morning on this trip. There were loads of fresh pastries and fruit every morning. They also have the usual hot chafing dishes and cooking stations. There appeared to be an antojitos station, but we could never find anyone there to help us. There was also a chef cutting up fresh fruit into small fruit plates, which we loved. We had two dinners at Himitsu, two at the Italian, and one at Oceana. I received the wrong entree at Oceana (rubbery scallops), but the other two restaurants were outstanding. They had a live piano player at the Italian, and it was just a delightful experience with amazing food. The cocktail/mocktail situation was a bit of a let down: we don’t really drink but enjoy trying something with our dinner. There were, however, no menus; we were told “we can make whatever you want!” But we don’t know what we want… eventually we found a laminated card at one of the pool bars, but it was just standard cocktails—nothing fun or artisanal. There also were almost no mocktails on offer. There was a nightly “drink of the day” that we discovered on the third night of our stay—these were fun, as were the passionfruit and blackberry margaritas. Compared to the bar menus at Excellence Riviera Cancun and Unico, for example, Secrets Akumal was just mostly doing the usual basics. We spent our time either on the beach or at the quiet pool. It was mid-March and extremely busy, but we generally managed to get chairs immediately after breakfast. The pool concierge at the quiet pool was excellent about proactively bringing us an umbrella, putting down towels, and checking in; there was a fruit man (who would carve up a mango to look like a flower) and an ice cream man who would come round in the afternoon. The pool concierge was definitely helping people find seats, which I appreciated; when we left one afternoon, he checked to make sure we weren’t coming back and then immediately waved over a couple who were waiting for a seat—so some of the whole “towel game” and “where can I sit?!” issues are dealt with really well. I am an avid snorkeler and admittedly spoiled for choice as I go once a year to the Maldives for snorkeling. The snorkeling in Akumal Bay is not bad if you go out with a local dive shop and start at the reef; unfortunately, once you get into the seagrass area, it’s a disturbing crush of people all rushing to look at the odd turtle or ray (it was much, much better out nearer the reef). I went out in front of Secrets as well, swimming out to the buoy line and then down to Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness Resort, but while the visibility was decent, there was very little to see and a ton of people in the water. If you want snorkeling, it’s really much better to go out to the reef in Puerto Morelos or even by boat from other resorts like ERC. Would I go back? Maybe. I’m disappointed by the state of the bay itself (which is not the hotel’s fault but it is one of the reasons why I book there) and I’d need to figure out how to get a room that’s always quiet. The staff are lovely and friendly, however, and even though it was absolutely full, we never had a problem with chairs or getting into restaurants. It's also lovely to watch the stingrays glide along past the shore and to wander through all the plants around the resort.

Secrets Akumal - A Beautiful Resort
We stayed at Secrets Akumal from April 28-May 4, 2024. The resort is a little over an hour from the Cancun Airport, and we used Kalido as our transfer to the resort (that's another review). We arrived around 11:00 a.m. and we were offered a cold towel and were escorted to the Preferred Lounge for check in. Our room wouldn't be ready until 3:00 but we were able to enjoy all the amenities of the resort while we waited. We changed into our swimsuits and did a quick walk around the resort to check it out. We then headed to the pool and had a few cocktails while we waited. We were a little hungry after traveling so we decide on the poolside pizza, made fresh! It was delicious! I think we had it almost everyday for lunch! Around 3:00 they called and told us our room was ready so we headed back to the preferred lounge. We booked a Preferred Club Junior Suite, Tropical View. We were in building 5 on the third floor and had a beautiful view of the resort. The room was smaller than what we expected, however it had plenty of room for what we needed. I loved that there were actually drawers (6) for us to put our clothes in. We have stayed some places where there aren't any drawers at all! There was a round jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, which looked cool but we never used, then there as a soaking tub on the balcony and that one we loved! There was a full length mirror in the bathroom along with the vanity mirror over the double sinks. The shower was very nice and we had no issues with hot water. We loved the "secret box" to put our room service plates in once we were finished eating. That is such a brilliant idea so that any leftover food isn't smelling up the room all night. The resort is on the smaller side, which we really liked! It's a jungle setting and beautifully landscaped. I had read that it was hard to find your way around and I just don't see how lol. It seemed pretty easy to get around in my opinion. There were 3 pools, the activity pool with the swim up bar. They had aqua aerobics, pool biking, volleyball, crazy games, etc. The second pool is more of a "quiet" pool but you could still hear what was going on at the activity pool in case you didn't want to miss anything. I heard the third pool referred to as the "quietest pool" lol. We never sat at this one but walked by it a couple of times and it was a lovely pool, large and meandering. Our pool server, Efren was amazing! We never had to wait for cocktails, as soon as he saw us getting to the end of our drink he was right there asking if we wanted another! Pool concierge Daniel and Osuna were so friendly and very helpful! We met Osuna on our first day and he set up our chairs and took very good care of us. Each day after that Daniel was right there checking in on us multiple times a day. He even convinced us to try snorkeling and showed us exactly the area to go in order to see the turtles! We need to give a huge shout out to Edgar at the Seaside Grill! We so enjoyed seeing him every morning for breakfast. He just has a way of brightening up your day and honestly made us feel like we were the only guests he was taking care of! We could see he treated all guests the same way! Overall Secrets Akumal was top notch in just about every category! Beautiful property and landscaping, gorgeous beach and friendly, helpful staff!
