Worth giving Il Mare a try, but know before you go

We stayed in the new Preferred Club of Il Mare at the Dream Curacao. This portion of the resort is on the southwest end of the property and features its own infinite pool, a bar and restaurant and two beach areas, which is shared with the Zoetry across the street through a reciprocity agreement. Full Disclosure, I am a Unlimited Vacation Club member, but this review is not promoting that program. Our check in was swift. We ended up at the ain check in to first route through UVC, only to then be taken to the dedicated reception area that is for Il Mare that is just inside of the main gate and to the left. We confirmed our reservation details and acknowledged our check in/check out details. We were introduced to Romke, our butler for the stay. Romke, along with Alex, Rug and their manager Leon, were really what made the difference for us during our stay. We were taken to our room, which is a futuristic looking "Pod" that we'd watched being build on our past stays at Zoetry. As cool as the pod was, it was unfortunately for us to see that they were already showing signs of wear, even though the Il Mare portion of the resort had only been opened for about 6 months. Some slight water damage along the roof seams and structural dents to the aluminum frames were visible...but...did not distract from our stay as we enjoyed the rest of the club. There is a variety of fish just off the beach and some decent snorkeling just along the perimeter of the resort. Il Mare guest has full access to the resort, so make sure to take advantage of the Hot tub next to the Spa. It was quite nice to end the afternoon with a soak as others vacated to pool to go get ready for dinner. Speaking of meals, if you go to Il Mare, use your Butlers wisely to coordinate meals at restaurants within the resort, including the one in the Il Mare area or over at Zoetry. this was a time saver for us. Now...there are some growing pains visible to the guests. The wait and bar staff seems *VERY* new at their roles at times, still figuring out even basic services, and this was across the resort...and late night room service was an issue. We tried ordering a few times and never got anything, in one case, we were told the overnight cook simply didn't show up for work. The food selections at the main restaurants are standard Dreams fare...so if you are looking for something more enticing...eat in Il Mare or over at Zoetry. That said...the views from the patios were amazing and to stargaze at night was easily done...even with the light pollution of Willemstad. Any activities at the main resort (shows and such) were barely heard in Il Mare. There are three sections, though as of this writing, they are all classified as the same room category. Spaggia (rooms 1-15), Lido (Rooms 16-30) and Orizzonte (31-52). Rooms 1-2, 15-17, 29-52 all are Ocean Front as I would describe them. 3-14, 18-28, and to some extend 32-36 are Beach Front....though 23-36 do not have an obstructed view of the water caused by beach chairs. (see pictures). Because they are all the same room category, it is kind of luck of the draw I was led to believe as to which room you got upon arrival. As the title says...it is worth a try, but go for the Butlers...they'll make sure you have a fun time ad while you are there, explore the island...lots to do on Curacao.

    Worst of the Worst

Trust the reviews - this place is truly awful. I'd like to be balanced so you can decide if you'd still like to go but "awful" really is the most balanced word I can offer. Broken lounge chairs, no hand towels, bad food, watered down drinks, staff that is annoyed that you're there. If that's your kind of vacation then this is the place for you! Oh, and I almost forgot - there was a kitchen fire when we were there (a real fire, not a small one) that emptied the hotel at midnight. The staff didn't know what to do and couldn't find the fire extinguishers. They handed some guests ice buckets to "help put out the fire". Thank goodness the fire department showed up 15 minutes later and put out the fire, but we still had to sleep in a room filled with smoke and thanked our lucky stars we were checking out the next morning because this can't be a safe place to be.

    great stay in Curacao

Excellent stay, congratulations to Mr Francisco - the General Manager of the resort. The hotel was very nice, the beach is excellent, the restaurants are nice, we had a lovely time and we will certainly come back if we decide to visit Curacao again for our holiday.

    Opportunities All Around.

My review is for the adults only section of the resort-iL Mare. We arrived at the main resort- Dreams and waited to be driven by golf cart to iL Mare- the adults only section. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by the staff and introduced to our personal Concierge/Butler (as they call themselves) for the duration of our stay. We were taken to our ocean front bungalow and it was clean and set up. Overall, the oceanfront bungalow was a blessing and it helped to elevate the experience. Pool side chairs were available and the view from the pool is excellent. The breakfast and lunch options for the iL Mare section was great. Dinners were good as well. Our Concierge made reservations for us to a nice rooftop bar in the city, and was there to address any issues we had during the stay. One thing to know before you go is to download WhatsApp since that is the main form of communication between you and the personal concierge. Service at the iL Mare restaurant is awesome. The wait staff is attentive and works hard to make sure you have a superb experience. One thing that would have elevated our experience during our stay is to have a tour upon our arrival; an orientation of sorts to help us take full advantage of all of the amenities. The main resort Dreams is in transition and there were numerous opportunities for greatness. The buffet is subpar and management should visit the buffet to view the conditions. An investment in fly deterrent is needed near the food to keep the flies away. Management should also consider a way to identify people staying at Dreams from the people staying at iL Mare, since some people decided to come to the iL Mare section and they did not reserve a room in this section of the resort. I have many more ideas for improvement for the main resort. I would caution anyone to review the resort before booking and make an informed choice about your vacation.

    Pleasantly surprised. First time AI

We did not have other AI stays to compare to, but after reading some other reviews, we were pleasantly surprised! We enjoyed our stay, and having meals already planned. The rooms were clean, helpful staff, and a smaller resort made it enjoyable for first time AI. We were happy we rented a car to explore the islands beaches and landmarks, but tours and onsite car rentals are available. Only negative was they ran out of certain liquors a few days, but back in stock the next day Would recommend to others
