Punta Cana Vacation FAQ

Top Destinations in Dominican Republic

Punta Cana Overview

  • Lap of Luxury

Luxury travelers in Punta Cana can enjoy a range of activities and experiences, such as golfing at world-class courses and indulging in spa treatments, dining at gourmet restaurants featuring international cuisine. Many luxury resorts also offer exclusive access to private beaches and offer a range of activities from snorkeling, diving, and sailing. For those seeking more adventure, Punta Cana has several outdoor activities such as zip-lining, ATV tours, and horseback riding. Get pampered day and night at luxurious amenities such as private plunge pools, Jacuzzis, large terraces, and elegant furnishings.
  • Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park

This nature reserve park is a 1,500 acre private reserve that is home to various animals, plants, and birds, including some species that are endemic to the island. Featuring 12 freshwater lagoons referred to as “eyes”. These lagoons come with their own unique characteristics including different species of fish, turtles, and other aquatic life.  Visitors can take a guided tour of the park to learn about all of the difference flora and fauna, in addition to learning about the cultural significant of the “eyes” to the indigenous Taino people. The park also features walking trails to explore the diverse ecosystem of the park; including the wetlands, tropical forests and savannas. Touring visitors may have an encounter with lizards, birds, and even a monkey.
  • Pick a Beach, Any Beach

Punta Cana is home to some of the world's most beautiful beaches, you just can’t go wrong with any choice. However, there are some characteristics that may help you find the perfect beach for your travels. The most popular beach is Bavaro Beach, with crystal-clear water that is ideal for aquatic and beach activities such as swimming, snorkeling, tanning in the white sand, or shopping and dining at any of the beachside bars. Families with smaller kiddos can feel at ease hanging out at Arena Gorda Beach, where the water is shallow. Arena Gorda also tends to be a calmer beach than other more popular areas, such as Bávaro Beach. Macao Beach is another great beach location. Macao is perfect for surfing and is known for its large waves, though, it also has some areas that are calmer for a light swim. Additionally, visitors can also do a horseback riding tour or rent ATVs along the beach. Scuba divers should visit Isla Catalina for its amazing coral reef. And, for an experience on an unspoiled beach, take a day trip to Isla Saona.
  • Family-friendly Fun for Everyone

You don't have to worry about leaving anyone out in Punta Cana. Even the littlest of beach bums have plenty to sink their tiny toes into. Most resorts offer supervised child care programs, staffed by certified pros you can trust. Many even have a designated Explorer's Club, where kids learn about nature and science in engaging activities like sand castle building and hunting for buried treasure. And even better, while you let the kids have fun, you can enjoy quiet time by getting a spa treatment or reading a good book poolside.

There are tons of excursions out in the area if the whole family wants to find adventure together, too. Activities like snorkeling and safari tours are great chances to learn a little while you enjoy a lot, especially if you have older kids. And places like Dolphin Island Park, Animal Adventure Park and the Marinarium give you options for having fun in the water away from the beach, too.

Tips & Transportation

  • Best Hidden Beach: Playa Limon

Playa Limon is a 2-mile, isolated, hidden beach lined with coconut trees on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic. Completely off the beaten path, this beauty is untouched by resorts and restaurants so you'll have to bring your own food, towels and so on if you want to hang out there.
  • Best Lunch on Bávaro Beach: Jellyfish Restaurant

You'll find delicious lobster and seafood meals on the menu at the Jellyfish Restaurant on Bávaro Beach. It's really close if you're staying at the Melia Caribe Tropical–just a short walk south. And it's beachfront too, so you'll have a gorgeous view of the beach and ocean while you eat. If you're eating on the top level, you may even catch a wedding on the beach!
  • Best Off-Resort Restaurant

Noah's is in a strip mall just down the street from the entrance to the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe. It's got everything: superb American/continental cuisine featuring fresh fish, steak, pasta, pizza and sushi. Make sure to try the fried camber and the Italian eggplant dip for appetizers. And don’t miss the flaming Crème brûlée either. Delicious!
  • Airport

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is located on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, centrally located to the many beachfront resorts in Punta Cana. The $10 Tourist Card, once required for all tourists to purchase separately at the airport, is now included in your airfare when visiting the country–one less thing to worry about!
  • Immigration & Customs

The DR requires a $20 USD departure tax that’s usually included in your airfare. Your flight attendant will typically give you customs paper work to fill out on the plane. After you’ve been through the immigration desk at the airport and you’ve picked up your luggage from baggage claim, you’ll go to customs, where officers will possibly check your bags.
  • Getting to Your Hotel

CheapCaribbean.com has partnered with Amstar as our premier transportation company in Punta Cana. They’ll provide you with safe, comfortable and professional transportation, from the airport to your hotel and back. They’ll also provide transportation to any excursions booked through our site that you’d like to take while you’re in your destination. It’s easy to find your Amstar team when you arrive at the airport. They’ll be standing in the ground transportation waiting area, holding a CheapCaribbean welcome sign. They wear floral shirts. All drivers are fluent in English, friendly and knowledgeable about the culture, history and things to do while you’re there. By the end of your ride, you’ll have made a new friend. Vehicles are all clean, modern and reliable. Amstar is also the official transportation rep for CheapCaribbean.com excursions when you book vacations to Punta Cana on our site. The majority of our partner hotels have an Amstar desk in or near the lobby so they’re easy to find, should you need them. For this reason, we suggest that our guests do not rent cars while in the Caribbean or Mexico as traffic laws and road quality and street signs are not the same as they are in the US.
  • Getting Around Punta Cana

You can get around your resort area most conveniently on foot, but if you plan on taking trips outside of the resort area, we recommend you use Amstar Tours. Excursions to fun activities include transportation to and from the hotel so you can count on a convenient and dependable ride.
