Cancun Vacation FAQ

Cancun Overview

  • Mayan ruins

    Mayan Ruins

The majesty and influence of the Mayans here is undeniable and continues to attract travelers time and time again. The iconic stepped pyramids, along with the history and mystique of the Mayan culture can be felt–and seen–nearly everywhere: Tulum, Chichen Itza and Coba are great ruins to check out. And here’s the good news: many locations are accessible by bus, car or one of the many tours offered in the area. But bring your walking shoes and sunscreen. The sun can be intense. You can even take the stairs down to the beach afterwards to cool off. For a non-beach day in Cancun, do a little time traveling and channel your inner archaeologist.
  • sunlight peeking through cave

    Natural Caves & Cenotes

After years of heavy foot traffic, hurricanes and the natural progression of these enchanting phenomena are natural pits, or sinkholes, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Once inside, you can see geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, which are spectacular. The word “cenote” was derived from the Mayan word “dzonot,” which means "sacred well" because they were considered the entrance to the mystical Mayan underworld. In and around Cancun, you’ll have many magical water systems to choose from. You can swim, float, jump in or just chillax. There’s nothing quite like them.
  • Blue beach white sand Cozumel

    Island Time: Cozumel

This little island is just a seashell’s throw from Cancun. It’s about a 50-minute ride to Playa del Carmen, then you take a 45-minute ferry ride to Cozumel. Scuba diving is the big draw here–the reef system is part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world. Plunge into crystal-clear, turquoise waters to see exotic fish, sunken ship wrecks and gorgeous coral reefs. The dreamtastic beaches, rich historical sites, eco-parks, grub spots, boutiques, and more are swoon-worthy and definitely worth the trip.
  • Golf course on beach

Way Above Par: Golfing in Cancun

Whether you’re an award-winning professional or just a casual player who loves the occasional stroll around the course, Cancun’s championship golf courses offer some of the most sunbelievable views and games around. Book a resort with access to nearby golf for some of the best resort golf in the Caribbean. Imagine teeing off with the Caribbean breeze flowing through your hair. Definitely a vacay worth traveling for. Regardless of your handicap, check out the Cancun Golf Club at Pok ta Pok or the Riviera Maya Golf Club for a great time in the fairways. They'll suit you to a tee.

Tips & Transportation

  • Cabanas on beach Isla Mujeres

    Isla Enchanting: Isla Mujeres

This slice of paradise is just a coconut’s throw away from Cancun–it’s situated across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun and has its own beachy culture and a chill, laid-back vibe. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do everything you want: you can dive into water sports (at your own pace, of course). Explore the diversity of this dream spot that includes everything from artisans to chefs to fisherman. Shop and browse the day away. Or you can choose to do absolutely nothing, except get some oh-so-amazing beach therapy. If you want to take a break from the bustling world of Cancun, sail on over to Isla Mujeres.
  • Five-Star Foodie Fun: Fantino at the Ritz-Carlton

Located in the Ritz-Carlton, this beautifully appointed five-star restaurant is famous for its fine Mexican cuisine. Not just another place to eat, Fantino serves "Iron Chef" style dishes that are expertly prepared and match the ultra-elegant atmosphere. Artistically prepared and rich in flavor, Fantino lives up to its reputation as one of the country’s best destinations for fine dining. Whether you are looking for an elegant night on the town, or celebrating a special occasion, let the top-notch staff at Fantino cater to your every food-related need. While the prices aren't the cheapest in town, they are quite affordable for such royal fanfare. Be aware, beach wear will not fly here, so check with the restaurant to make sure your attire is up to snuff.

    Take the Plunge: Underwater Museum

You've come to Cancun for a reason. Talk about making a splash, the Cancun Underwater Museum is the largest underwater museum on the planet. Not confined by velvet ropes and tempered glass, the Underwater Museum lets you snorkel or scuba your way through over 400 sculptures that showcase how the Mayan people may have evolved through the course of their empire – in depths ranging from nine to 20 feet. Luckily, it’s easily accessible to both amateur divers and snorkelers, so make sure you take the time to dive into this historical phenomenon in the deep.
  • Stage with band and audience

    Boogie Nights: Mambo Café

No trip to Cancun is complete without a visit to Mambo Café. It’s where the city’s hottest live bands and DJs are cranking out tropical and salsa tunes starting at midnight. All you night owls will love it. Note: it’s a somewhat upscale place that has a beautiful, crystal chandelier in the main room so you can arrive all decked out. Better still, you can order some delicious apps as well as cocktails, which will help you go the distance while you merengue, bachata and everything else in between.
  • The ruins at Coba Mexico

Mayan Magic: The Ruins at Coba

Rising between two lagoons in the tropical jungle of Quintana Roo, the breathtaking, off-the-beaten-path Coba Ruins will blow your beach hair back. Once there, you'll be greeted with a friendly tour guide who'll share all the secrets of this ancient city. The complex is a bit spread out - there are smaller ruins that you can explore on the way to see the big one. You can either walk or rent a bike and pedal your way down a shaded path to get there. You can even climb it, but be forewarned: there are a lot of stairs and it’s steep. However, there is a rope you can hang on to as you make your way to the top. It’s worth the trek because the view at the top of the jungle is incredible. Luckily, there is a hut right at the base where you can get refreshing drinks after your climb. On the way back to Cancun, swing by Tulum for either another big dose of antiquity at the ruins, or you can grab a drink and watch the sun set at one of the boho-chic bars.

    Airport

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the second busiest airport in Mexico. With over 200 flights a day, Cancun International Airport has recently undergone a massive expansion project to accommodate the influx of passengers and cargo for years to come. Your Cancun resort can be anywhere from 10-60 minutes away from the airport. Book transfers to and from your resort with CheapCaribbean.com.
  • U.S. passport

    Immigration & Customs

When you reach the arriving terminal, you will be guided to the immigration hall where you will form a line and wait for your turn with the immigration officer. You will supply the officer with your passport and answer a few routine questions about the nature of your stay. Regarding customs for US and European travelers, all you need to do is produce a current passport in order to enter and leave Cancun.
  • Getting to Your Cancun Resort

Once you pass through immigration, you will pick up your bags at the baggage claim and exit through the Arrival gate. Once outside, find the nearest Amstar transport bus, or local taxis and airport buses. CheapCaribbean.com has partnered Amstar as our premier transportation company in Cancun. They’ll provide you with safe, comfortable and professional transportation, from the airport to your all inclusive resort and back. They’ll also provide transportation to any excursions booked through our site that you’d like to take while you’re in your destination. It’s easy to find your Amstar team when you arrive at the airport. They’ll be standing in the ground transportation waiting area, holding a CheapCaribbean welcome sign. All drivers are fluent in English, friendly and knowledgeable about the culture, history and things to do while you’re there. By the time you arrive to your resort, you’ll have made a new friend. Vehicles are all clean, modern and reliable. Amstar is also the official transportation rep for CheapCaribbean.com excursions when you book vacations to a Cancun resort on our site. The majority of our partner all-inclusive resorts have an Amstar desk in or near the lobby so they’re easy to find, should you need them. For this reason, we suggest that our guests do not rent cars while in the Caribbean or Mexico as traffic laws and road quality and street signs are not the same as they are in the US.
  • Getting Around Cancun

The overall layout of Cancun is tourist-friendly and easy to explore. If you need to get around town, the bus is the preferred mode of transportation as it's both affordable and operates throughout the day. If you'd rather have some privacy, taxis are always available, but can be a bit expensive to use so make sure you agree upon the fare before getting in. Another popular way to get around Cancun is by renting a car, but make sure the car is in good condition or the police may stop you.
