Are you still committed to your New Year’s resolutions? If you’ve already broken the diet or deleted that meditation app, you’re not alone! Studies show that as many as 80% of Americans give up on their resolutions in the first month (we don’t like the word “fail”). It’s time flip the script. Take on a NEW resolution and make it one that makes a difference to the world.

Adjust your choices

Seemingly small decisions can help make a big impact in marine conservation. Souvenir shops and stands often sell jewelry and other items made out of conch shells and turtle shells. Skip those to help prevent overharvesting, and at mealtime, peruse the menu for sustainable Caribbean seafood choices like lionfish, locally caught tuna and mahi-mahi.

Adopt a beach

Sure, adopting a pet is great, but have you ever thought about adopting a beach? The Blue Ocean Society has regular beach cleanups that keep loads of debris from washing into the ocean (think cigarettes, food wrappers, straws and bottle caps).  But it’s more than just picking up trash; you commit to cleaning a beach once a month and logging the items you collect to help shape the organization’s pollution prevention programs.

Donate to a good cause

There are so many organizations are making a difference out there. Support them! There are Caribbean organizations like the Turks and Caicos Islands Turtle Project and Caribbean Reef Buddy. Larger groups like Secore International work to restore coral reefs in the Bahamas, while The Nature Conservancy works in 17 Caribbean countries and territories to protect oceans, coastlines and reefs.

Meaningful resolutions don’t have to depend on a timeline. Just get started! You can even go above and beyond by taking a getaway to visit one of the beaches you’re supporting.
