1. It’s Not Mexico’s Independence Day. That’s September 16th. May 5th commemorates the day in 1862 that the very outnumbered Mexican militia beat the pants off the French in the Franco-Mexican war. Tres bueno, no?
2. Mexico Prevailed, but Didn’t Win the War. Despite their epic victory, they did not win the war. The French ultimately won and ruled the region for five years.
3. On this day, Americans Chow Down on up to 81 Million Avocados. According to the California Avocado Commission, this is how many of these rich, delicious fruits (yes, technically, they are fruit) are consumed by folks in the U.S. Dig in.
4. You Can Enjoy Chihuahua Races in Chandler, Arizona. During the Chandler Cinco de Mayo fest, you’ll not only get to eat delicious tacos, you’ll also get to see these mighty little fellas race, where in years past, they’ve crowned a King and Queen. It’s a yearly event at the Chandler Public Library Courtyard.
5. Tequila, the Drink of the Day, Used to Be Like Beer. Derived from the agave plant, the roots of this festive drink date back to the days of the Aztecs, where they brewed a beer-like drink, pulque, which was made from a related agave plant.
