Can’t decide where to drop your anchor on your next beach vacay? You’ll shore-ly love the Abacos! Nicknamed "The Real Bahamas,” this small chain of islands and cays is the perfect laid-back getaway. You can fly into Marsh Harbor’s airport on Great Abaco (it’s only a 50-minute flight from Miami), but the best way to get to and explore the Abacos is by boat. So, let’s set sail and discover all the awesomeness of the Abacos!
Elbow Cay
What’s red, white and candy-striped? A lighthouse, of course! The Hope Town Lighthouse is an iconic Bahamian landmark and one of the last manually operated lighthouses in the world. It welcomes visitors to Elbow Cay and is one of the most Instagrammable spots in the Bahamas. You can climb the 101 steep steps for some sweeping ocean views and an epic selfie, but if you’re not up for breaking a sweat, you can rent a golf cart and cruise around the cay! The scenery will still take your breath away, and there are plenty of photo ops along the way.
Marsh Harbour
On the other side of Elbow Cay is the central hub of the Abacos, Marsh Harbour. This is where you’ll find fabulous hotels, restaurants, shops, bars and the only stoplight in the Out Islands. But don’t get it twisted with huge cruise ports like Nassau–Marsh Harbour still has that small-town feel and chill island vibe we know and love!
We suggest staying at Abaco Beach Resort at Boat Harbour for an authentic island experience. Whether you’re looking to rest and relax or jam in as many activities as you can, this resort has it all. You can lounge in a cabana, snack on cracked conch and charter a boat all in the same day–it really doesn’t get better than this.
Treasure Cay
X marks the spot! We can totally see why Treasure Cay is one of the most beloved beaches in the Abacos. It’s home to some of the islands’ most mesmerizingly blue water and softest white sands, so it’s the perfect pit stop for a beach day. But don’t forget your sunhat and sunscreen! There aren’t many shady spots on this stretch of sand, so be prepared. We don’t want you to return home looking like a lobster.
It’s time to seas the day and start planning your Abacos vacay–all of this awesomeness is just a click away!
