La Romana is a must-see in the Dominican Republic. With a variety of exciting activities with stunning white sand beaches as the background, you'll be living your best life in this Caribbean hot spot. While the list could go on and on, we've narrowed down a seven must-do things in this tropical haven.

Escape to Saona Island

Located just off the coast, Saona Island should be at the top of your list to visit. It’s a Caribbean oasis with shockingly white sand and transparent sky blue waters that will absolutely take your breath away. If that’s not enough, it’s also a sanctuary for several species of migratory birds, plus it has jaw-dropping caves to explore. No matter how you choose to spend your time here, you won't regret discovering this paradise.

Sample Hand-Rolled Cigars

Believe it or not, cigars are one of the Dominican Republic’s most important imports. That’s why, if you’re into them, you need to stop by La Tabacalera de Garcia Cigar Factory. You’ll tour the grounds and see the process of making these cigars, start to finish. Maybe even get to sample a smoke or two.

Explore Cool Cave Paintings

Inside Cueva de las Maravillas or “Cave of Wonders,” the walls are covered in paintings and engravings that were created by the Taino people, the indigenous residents of the Greater Antilles, the area in which the Dominican Republic is located. In fact, it was the Taino people who greeted Columbus when he arrived on this dreamy island. Inside this cave, you’ll gaze upon 10 petroglyphs (rock engravings) and 472 pictographs (paintings on the wall). It’s something different to explore on your beach vacay and probably unlike anything else you've ever seen.

Ride Dune Buggies Through Sugar Cane Fields

If you’re craving the thrill of racing through the countryside, then dune buggies are right up your alley. You can sail through sugar cane fields and dirt roads and let your worries fade away. Along the way, you’ll pass through a small village called Bateyes, where you’ll learn all about sugar cane and even get to taste some of this sweet nectar. You might even come up on the Rio Chavon, where you can take a quick dip to cool off before your next joy ride.

Cruise Down the Rio Chavon

Just east of La Romana is a mighty gorge called the Chavon River. As you sail down this majestic river, you’ll get a picture of a lush tropical jungle filled with wildlife. While you’re taking in all these exotic critters, you can sit back and relax on a glorious boat ride. Films like Apocalypse Now, Rambo 3 and Anaconda were filmed here, and once you get a look at Rio Chavon, you’ll instantly recognize why.

Play at Playa Minitas

This private sanctuary of beachy bliss is located at Casa de Campo, one of the most epic golf courses on the island. Whether you want to soak up the sun or dive into watersports like snorkeling, kayaking or paddle boating, you won't be able to get enough of this spot. From the delectable cuisine served beachside to the pristine beachfront, Playa Minitas doesn't disappoint.

Take the Plunge with a Submarine Ride

This is one of the best things to experience in La Romana. In addition to gazing at all the colorful fish and gorgeous coral, you can also snorkel, scuba dive or swim in the bright blue waters. Daring to go into the deep ocean blue definitely has its perks.
