As the second largest island in the Caribbean, it can seem daunting to choose which excursions to check out in the Dominican Republic. Whether you want something more relaxing or adventure-focused, we’ve found some of the best things to do through Amstar, our preferred partner for in-destination transfers and excursions, in the island’s top destinations.

Catalina Island Snorkeling – La Romana

Located off the coast of La Romana, Isla Catalina’s picturesque beach and secluded location is reason enough to visit, but taking the guided tour to snorkel makes it even better. Enjoy a breathtaking cruise on a motorboat out to the island where you’ll be greeted by calm waters and a vacant beachfront. Dive into the crystal-clear water and discover unique coral formations and colorful fish for the ultimate snorkeling experience. This excursion is complete with snacks and an open bar on the beach–can it get better?

Damajagua Waterfalls – Puerto Plata

Known also as 27 Charcos, Damajagua Waterfalls features 27 pools connected by 12 waterfalls, making this a picturesque spot to explore and swim. You’ll be able to climb up these beauties and even slide down some natural waterslides, too! Adrenaline junkies can jump into the water, with one spot having a 25-foot drop! This beautiful oasis is hidden in the Northern Corridor mountains of Puerto Plata–making it the perfect excursion to get away and have a little fun outside your resort.

Monkey Land – Punta Cana & La Romana

Okay, let’s be real, everyone loves monkeys. No wonder the DR has an excursion where you get to explore a 5-acre monkey sanctuary teeming with squirrel monkeys! While Monkey Land is situated closer to Punta Cana, transportation from La Romana is a little over an hour. This exciting adventure filled with new monkey friends and delicious local coffee and cocoa is totally worth the trip there.

Saona Island – Punta Cana, La Romana & Santo Domingo

Known as the hidden island of the Dominican Republic, a day trip to Saona Island is the ultimate day of fun and relaxation. You’ll head over to the island via La Romana, Punta Cana or Santo Domingo by catamaran or speedboat–your choice. After your picturesque ride there, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to lounge on the beach or put a little more pep in your step with volleyball and dance lessons. All of this combined with an authentic Dominican buffet lunch will have you feeling like a local in no time.

Cayo Arena – Puerto Plata

Think you’ve been to paradise? You’ll rethink your answer after an excursion to Cayo Arena in Puerto Plata. Nicknamed “Paradise Island,” Cayo Arena stands as a small sandbar off the northwestern coast, surrounded by aquamarine water that will simply wow you. You can opt to take a catamaran or speedboat out to the island, and on your way, you’ll pass through beautiful mangroves with a chance of spotting manatees and other sea life! The island itself is the perfect place to explore the water by snorkeling alongside schools of colorful, unique fish. This dreamy excursion is truly one to remember!

Reef Explorer – Punta Cana & La Romana

While this excursion sounds like snorkeling along a coral reef, it’s much more than that. You will have the opportunity to check out Punta Cana’s coral reef, but you’ll also be able to snorkel with stingrays and nurse sharks as well. Ever want to hug a stingray? Here’s the place! There are also kayaks and paddle boards to enjoy if you prefer to stay above the water, as well as spots to lounge and enjoy a Mamajuana–the DR’s signature drink. This excursion is adults-only, so it gives people the opportunity to enjoy the activities without screaming and splashing kiddos all around them.

While these are some of the best excursions in the Dominican Republic, there is still even MORE! Check out all of Amstar’s offerings and be sure to add on an awesome adventure to your next Dominican Republic getaway.
