Cheap and Cheerful!
The beach is absolutely glorious! Lovely soft sand and uncrowded sandy strolls in both directions. Bluest water as far as you can see and palm trees framing stunning sunrises. All this alone is worth the price of admission! For a cheap and cheerful resort, Viva Fortuna can't be beat. We upgraded to an oceanfront room which was brilliant - you are literally ON the beach! The rooms could certainly use some upgrading but ours was very clean, the bed was comfy, the fridge was cold and the shower was hot. The food at the buffet was fine (nothing spectacular) but booking a specialty restaurant was virtually impossible. Even on our first day we were told "everything is booked!" We did manage 2 meals at the Cafe Viva and both nights the room was half full at best. So "booked" really means understaffed. That said, this is NOT a 5 star resort and the food (and horrible wine) reflects that. Most of the staff members were friendly and helpful, nobody in our group starved and the beach was the best! My biggest complaint was the non-stop BOOM-BOOM music. The DJ was definitely not reading the room. Sure there were a few 20-somethings, but far more mature adults and families. I am a long-time radio DJ and I would have chosen much differently, especially for certain times of day. And ... if you were sitting at the beach bar (which should have umbrellas on the tables!) the music there was in very loud conflict with the pool music. Please - pick one! On a positive not, the evening singer was very good! Extra note: our package was with Sunwing and I would be very reluctant to book with them again. At the Freeport airport we had to wait 40 minutes to check in and then another 45 to pass security. Then, upon our return to Toronto we had to wait almost TWO hours for our luggage!

Not recommended!!!
Personnel: unmotivated and unreliably poorly trained... (Had a wrong room and at first nobody cared....) Hotel rooms: The AC stinks of mold the rooms are very dirty and for cleaning the room is simply submerged. Which has nothing to do with cleaning. Food: It's so lala but it doesn't rip out.... Infrastructure: Bath towels are partly out of stock and you just can't get one. AC whistle/bar does not feature the 0815 alcohol or just cheap lint... (Wanted a rum and got vodka... then I asked if he was kidding me?! There's a lot else, but it just makes me sick...

Look elsewhere!
We were at Viva Fortuna Beach last year at the same time and decided to get married there the next year. Very different experiences. One of the other returning guests commented on how less engaged the employees seemed; their theory was that the management may have changed. It is a very beautiful beach. The resort is small and has some unique features. For instance, we had never seen a trapeze at an all inclusive before. The entertainment is very good and we really enjoyed most shows. The acoustic guitar shows were also a highlight both years. But it wasn't all good- despite a year of planning, at least 3 couples weren't given the rooms they selected; they were given 2 beds instead of the 1 King they picked. They originally had us, the wedding couple in separate beds. One employee even tried to claim the resort didn't have king size beds. Food was worse than the previous year. For instance, there was hardly any bacon at breakfast and almost hidden. No chicken nuggets at beachside pub and the hot dogs/burgers/fries were always cold because the employees would make huge amounts rather than smaller, fresher batches. The buffet was definitely worse than the previous year. Rooms are dated with numerous people having issues ranging from humidity to almost everyone having problems with water pressure/temperature in the shower. They don't supply water or beer in the rooms. And they actually turn off the water machines to refill your bottles at night. Most importantly though was our wedding. We had paid for the "Cheers to Forever" package. Very basic but we had modest needs. Unfortunately even those needs weren't able to be fulfilled however; Adalgisa our wedding planner somehow managed to forget our extra bouquets/boutonnieres we paid extra for. She also insulted my wife after our wedding rehearsal by saying she wouldn't be welcome in the outfit she was wearing to the a la carte restaurant (picture attached). But the worst was "Dr Love" our supposed wedding photographer. Included in our package were 10 photos so we weren't expecting much. He didn't introduce himself (and we have never been shown a pricelist). He decided 9am the day of our ceremony to randomly cold call the room trying to "upsell" us. I wasn't receptive. He was obviously annoyed and quipped "no professional photography is allowed on the beach." I thought afterwards that was an interesting statement given we hadn't seen that on any documentation and that it is actually a public beach up to a certain point. No contract was ever signed either. Our friends and family took many nice photos and videos. We even met other guests who shared theirs as well. A number of guests spoke of Dr Love being inappropriate. Mostly younger females. He claims to be a Reverend ironically and married for 30 years. But from what we experienced, this guy is neither religious or committed. He charged different amounts for photos from different people too. In fact, we laughed at the fact he took so many pictures of my friend's wife and so few of the bride. Initially, it was $17/printed picture ($12 for some). Strangely, 2 weeks after leaving we asked about purchasing our photos- now the charge was $50/digital photo totalling $18,200 for the 364 pictures should we want them. We could have brought our professional photographer friend and her girlfriend on the trip for around $3000. I've brought this up to hotel management; Basically they have an extortionist creep on the site to take advantage of guests and newlyweds alike. We haven't received a response. I do not recommend this resort and suggest any prospective couples look elsewhere for a place to tie the knot or even visit.

Family vacay
I have been to a ton of all inclusive vacations so I do have some experience. We paid quite a bit to be here and it is a 3 star at best. Check in was so chaotic, no one to help you with your bags which is fine but tell me where my room is located. Our rooms are decent but very outdated. No water or anything in the rooms. We brought water bottles but what a pain. No coffee places until 7 am, I am an early riser and no coffee in the rooms. There is a machine but no coffee to use. Bring your own. I was able to book the restaurants but no one else in our party of 8 were able to. You have to do it on the app as soon as you get your room number. There is always something to eat but it's the same food. The snack bar burgers are good with fries. I would compare the food to a 4 star cuba vacay. There is no staff around... one person at each bar. Overall, it was ok but I wouldn't come back.
